You will be surprised to know that some healthy foods are not as healthy as you think they are. While these foods may be healthy in itself, for some of them, the added ingredients to make them taste really good are what make them “unhealthy.”
Here are some of the seemingly healthy foods that Medifast Coupons has provided for us that you need to take a closer look at:
Salads

Salads are generally healthy. However, what makes them unhealthy is the type and amount of toppings that one puts on them. Heaping up your salad with creamy sauces, cheese, nuts and other calorie filled add ons will no doubt increase your salad’s calorie content.

Keep your salad healthy by loading it up with healthy vegetables. Limit the high calorie toppings and keep your dressing on the side instead of pouring it over your salad. This way, you can dip your salad on it and control the amount of dressing that you use.

Smoothies

Smoothies have always been considered healthy as it can help you meet the daily recommended fruit servings. However, smoothies and fresh fruits do not necessarily fall in the same category as smoothies often contain added sugars which can help add in the calories.

If you are craving for a smoothie, it is best that you choose one made from low fat yogurt with no added sugar. Alternatively, you can also have freshly squeezed fruit juice without added sugar instead.

Energy Bars

Energy bars are seemingly good, healthy snack options in the sense that they contain fiber and protein which help you feel full. However, a lot of these energy bars contain a huge amount of calories. While it may be okay to have an energy bar in lieu of a meal, having one for snack will cause your calorie intake to increase significantly.

Always check on the energy bar’s nutritional facts and make sure that you are choosing one with lesser calories.

Yogurt

As you may probably have observed, not all yogurts are created equal. Different brands of yogurts are made differently and as such, not all yogurts have the same nutritional values. In fact, some premium whole milk yogurts can contain a huge amount of saturated fat. And while yogurts are a good source of calcium, some yogurts can be considered more of a dessert rather than a healthy snack.

What you need to do is to compare your favorite yogurt brand with the other brands available. Always opt for plain, low fat yogurt and add in fresh fruits instead.

Granola

Granola has always been considered a healthy food. In fact, not many people are aware that granola often contains a lot of sugar, fat and calories. In addition, granola’s have a small serving size which ultimately, makes people consume more than just one serving.

When consuming granola, it is highly recommended that you pay attention and follow the recommended serving size. Keep in mind that low fat granola versions often contain as much calories as the regular granola does.

Glens Falls, New York (PRWEB) July 29, 2005 -

A psychologist who has been treating Anorexia and Bulimia for many years is offering online lectures and chat rooms designed to educate adults about the link between eating disorders and obesity. Dr. Gina Scarano-Osika began exploring this link a few years ago and her efforts have culminated in a new approach to treating compulsive overeating, which she will share with the general public later this week.

“The treatment of obesity is very complex and people need individual attention. I want to tell people what I know about treating eating disorders so that they can begin to understand why they overeat”. Dr. Osika encourages her patients to look at the biological, physiological, personality and social factors that lead to compulsive overeating. She has taken interventions used to treat Anorexia and Bulimia and tailored them to help obese and overweight patients understand their impulse to overeat and override what they know they should do.

Dr. Scarano-Osika has been treating eating disorders since 1990. In both her clinical practice and research she recognizes that their exist many varying “subclinical” eating disorders which warrant attention. “In treating these subclinical syndromes, we may be able to prevent the more life threatening illnesses such as obesity and anorexia…..and because these subclinical conditions are less acute, intervention by an eating disorder specialist may not be needed” says Dr. Osika.

In addition to offering educational sessions, Dr. Osika’s website includes a chat room for adults in which they can receive support as they work through lessons and cope with the stigma of being overweight. Dr. Scarano-Osika states “Obese folks feel stigmatized and sometimes ignored, which can lead to all kinds of mood disorders and social phobia….especially for teens, obesity is a very isolating and lonely illness.” Online chats are manageable and less threatening ways for these folks to socialize,” says Osika. “Chat rooms provide even bedridden folks with a manageable social outlet so that they can feel less alone and isolated, while also working a program to help them understand their impulse to overeat….With a little education and a lot of support from others, anything can be possible for a heavyset person”.

Dr. Osika’s weekly online lecture series will convene each Monday evening at 9:00 pm eastern standard time. Her first lecture/chat is scheduled for the evening of Monday August 1, 2005. Online lectures/support are available at http://www.FriendlyMirrors.com

(PRWEB) September 25, 2004

42 year old Los Angeles resident Sergio Silva underwent the first stage of his journey toward a better quality of life today at the Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity. Today Silva underwent an abdominal wall panniculectomy to have 100 pounds of fat removed to prepare him for the Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass. After Silva heals from the surgery in several months, Dr. Fobi will give him the Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass.

Six years ago Silva weighed 400 pounds and was suffering from hypertension, sleep apnea, chronic heart failure, and diabetes. He had tried various diets and exercise plans but lost no weight. As his weight continue to increase, the quality of his life started to decrease. “I could not work, walk, or take care of my personal needs because of the obesity,” says Silva.

Silva, who has a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 85, was refused treatment at other obesity centers because of the high risk of the procedure. Body mass index (BMI) closely correlates with body fat and can help predict the development of health problems related to excess weight. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) identifies obesity as a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater. Obesity is further broken down to Class I (BMI of 30-34.9 kg/m2), Class II (BMI of 35-39.9 kg/m2), and Class III (BMI of 40 kg/m2 or greater), also called extreme obesity.

“The whole perception of obesity has changed,” says Dr. Fobi, Medical Director of the Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity located at Tri-City Regional Medical Center in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. “It is no longer simply considered a will power problem that we can just afford to ignore. The costs to society are now apparent and reflected in a number of recent national health studies. The risk of surgery is minimal compared with the potentially fatal health problems caused by remaining obese.”

The national scales have tipped in the favor of obesity and the costs are sobering. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 65 percent of U.S. adults qualify as overweight. The real impact of this obesity epidemic is staggering with each year more than 300,000 people dying from obesity-related conditions.

For the first time, obesity exacts a higher toll on health and healthcare costs than either smoking or drinking as serious obesity-related problems like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, strokes and certain cancers have reached epidemic levels. Obesity raises a person’s healthcare costs by 36 percent and medication costs by 77 percent which overall accounts for an additional $ 395 a year.

The Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity is a comprehensive medical weight loss center that specializes in the minimally invasive laparoscopic and open Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass Surgery. The Center is dedicated to promoting health and wellness for the morbidly obese patient. The Center has been in existence for more than 20 years under the direction of Dr. MAL Fobi, M.D. F.A.C.S., and has treated more than 10,000 obese patients. If you have any questions about the Center or the services it offers, please call 1-800-564-3624, visit us online at http://www.cstobesity.com .

3 Ways Childhood Obesity Can Be Managed And Treated?

Following your physicians advice and educating yourself by reading up about childhood obesity We have all heard about the weight problem in America. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Obesity usually begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during adolescence. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. In some cases certain medical disorders can cause obesity, but less than 1 percent of all obesity is caused by physical problems. Here are THREE (3) Ways Childhood Obesity can be Managed and Treated:

1. Make Healthy Eating your first priority- The aim is to slow or halt weight gain so the child will grow into his or her body weight over a period of months to years. The only way to lose weight is to reduce the number of calories being eaten and a healthy diet will accelerate the weight loss. Since obesity often affects more than one family member, making healthy eating and regular exercise a family activity can improve the chances of successful weight control for the child or adolescent.

2. Exercise and Activity- Involving your child in a formal exercise program or school sponsored sport not only gets them away from the TV/computer/refrigerator but they burn up the excess fat that their body has accumulated. You may not see a change right away but know that just 50 minutes of exercise three times a week cleans up blood lipid profiles (In laymen terms that’s fats, waxes and phosphatides in the blood) and improves blood pressure.

3. Work with your physician- take your child in for an annual checkup and go over the diet plan you have come up with. Make sure the diet and exercise you have planned is correct for your child. The whole point here is to adjust your childs weight so they’re in the healthy range. The last thing you want to do is cause damage.

Safe Obesity Surgery At Top Indian Hospitals, Safemedtrip.com Launches Bariatric Services Program

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease. The symptoms build slowly over a period of time and dieting or exercise alone are rarely effective. Safemedtrip.com a company set up by a group of hospital industry professionals and managed by doctors and professional managers with a strong shared vision and ethical values has helped a large number of people suffering from the ill effects of morbid obesity to find a lasting cure at top Indian hospitals.

Bariatric Surgery procedures in particular Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is referred to as the “gold standard” of weight loss surgery (WLS).

Surgical procedures designed to help treat severe obesity are gaining increasing acceptance of the weight loss surgeries available today, gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding are the two procedures recommended by the US National Institutes of Health. The amount of weight each patient loses is relative, but to give you some idea, consider this: A 2006 study published in the journal Obesity Surgery demonstrated that at one year following gastric bypass, 85% of patients had lost 65% of their excess weight.

Gastric bypass surgery has been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes in adults. But with the rising obesity rate and increase in type 2 diabetes in adolescents, gastric bypass is an option to turn around diabetes in obese teens,

Obesity Surgery Procedures

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Sleeve Gastrectomy

The benefits of this surgery are more than skin deep. Bariatric Surgery not only helps the patient look better; more importantly, with proper post-surgical care, it will helps het feel better and healthier.

Most patients lose at least 50 per cent of excess body weight. Most people with hypertension and/or diabetes no longer need medications.

Safemedtrip.com affiliated India’s top private hospitals offer a truly comprehensive Obesity surgery program. The team consists of a surgeon and his team dedicated to obese patients, dieticians, endocrinologists, psychiatrists and psychologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, anaesthesiologists, sleep medicine experts and support staff.

However India being a developing country, the medical travellers have to prepare for facing some issues. While the hospitals do a great job of medical treatment, simple non medical aspects like arranging for safe airport transfers, hotels and local facilitation can be sometimes challenging. Therefore it’s advisable to take help from a trusted organisation like safemedtrip.com, who can guide you and make your visit to India a successful, rather a memorable medical tourism experience.

Where Does Childhood Obesity Begin?

Everywhere you look now days you see children who are over weight and out of shape. It amazes me because it seems like everyone from Richard Simmons to Oprah has an exercise program. There’s a different machine being sold for every muscle in the body. Why are we seeing this weight problem in every school in the nation? So where does childhood obesity begin?

If you look at what’s going on right now, two-thirds of Americans are obese. Two-thirds!! The stats estimate there are 300 million people in the United States, that means 200 million of us are taking up too much space.

In 1991 no state in the United States had an obesity rate above twenty per cent. The National average in 1980 was fifteen per cent.

So what’s it look like now?

Adult obesity has gone up in 23 states and has not gone down in any state
Adult obesity rates exceed twenty five per cent in 31 states and exceed twenty per cent in 49 states.
16 states experienced an increase in obesity for the second year in a row.
11 states experienced an increase for a third straight year

Four states Tennessee, Alabama, West Virginia and Mississippi are above 30 per cent and Mississippi is the highest at 32.5 per cent for five straight years. 8 of the 10 states with the highest rates are in the south.

Children between 2 and 5 years old that are over weight are four times as likely to be over weight adults. Mississippi has the highest rate of obesity for children between the ages of 10-17 at 44%. The ratio of states that have the biggest weight problem in adults also have the biggest problem in their children.

The answer to our question “Where Does Childhood Obesity Begin? is at home! We are teaching our kids how to eat from the day they are born to the day they are on their own. They are like little computers and if you put garbage into a computer you get garbage out. So if you teach a kid to eat poorly, then that’s all they know. Educate yourself first and learn what is healthy. It takes time and dedication to replace establishes behaviors with new, healthier behaviors. Find exercises you can fit into your daily schedule and include the other members of the family. Go to http://www.squidoo.com/childhoodobesitystartbattle for the tools you will need to be successful.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 10, 2008

http://www.actionagainstobesity.com — As America’s overweight population is projected to reach 75 percent by 2015, and with more than half of women of child-bearing years overweight and at increased risk for infertility, pregnancy complications and delivering a child with birth defects, Anti-Obesity Advocate MeMe Roth and National Action Against Obesity blast Lifetime Network’s “How to Look Good Naked” reality series, hosted by Carson Kressley.

The new Friday-night weekly series promotes itself as a salve to reduce women’s self-loathing, featuring women critical of their own bodies. Drawing the ire of National Action Against Obesity is “How to Look Good Naked’s” emphasis on “obesity as beautiful” and the dangerous denial of compromised health due to obesity.

“When we observe obesity, we’re seeing the effects of self-abuse. To end self-loathing, one must stop self-induced abuse. It’s a change in behavior, not a change in word choice — like calling the evidence of abuse beautiful. It’s no more logical to compliment the aesthetics of obesity than the beauty of cigarette-stained teeth or track marks on a junkie’s arm,” said NAAO President MeMe Roth. “A dangerous characteristic of obesity is denial. Multiple studies show that individuals are in denial about the extent of their own adiposity — and most tragic — parents are in denial about the degree of their own children’s obesity.”

In its first episode 32-year-old Layla is profiled, who feels she is 40 pounds overweight. She is told her current weight is both “natural” and “healthy.” Layla then participates in a series of events set to improve her body image including confronting a three-way mirror, having her underwear-clad image projected onto a Santa Monica building for passers by to critique, and then having a make-over and posing for an in-the-buff photo shoot. “How to Look Good Naked” also has a complementary web site where you’re asked to “find your body type” amid models showcasing different body types. A severely obese woman is classified as “hippy,” and a slim woman is “boyish.”

NAAO does not doubt the host’s likeable, witty sincerity, yet questions where Carson Kressley will be in the event Layla suffers fertility problems, chronic disease and possibly premature death due to her obesity. Career-wise, at her weight, studies show Layla also can expect lesser pay than counterparts at a healthy weight.

NAAO’s position is that Lifetime Networks, REDBOOK’s Editor-in-Chief Stacy Morrison, (who appears in a promotional tie-in to advise on camouflaging extra weight), and show sponsor Keri Renewal Serum all have an opportunity to help rather than pander to its overweight, at-risk female audience. NAAO urges the series’ producers to enlist experts to intervene on the nutrition, exercise and psychological issues contributing to their participants’ health-threatening weight. ‘”How to Look Good Naked’ is correct when it states, ‘the average American woman is a size 14 or 16.’ That shouldn’t make us feel beautiful, but rather set off alarms,” said Roth.
